Southern California Botanists Statement on Diversity and Inclusion

Southern California Botanists (SCB) was formed in 1934 to promote the study and conservation of native plants and plant communities of California. We carry out our mission with plants and people in mind. SCB recognizes that racial inequities are embedded in our everyday actions and institutions; as such, they have a significant impact on the botanical community, including impacting who has access to participate in botany and conservation. As a Society, we are committed to transparency regarding actions and initiatives we undertake to promote justice and inclusivity for underrepresented groups, e.g., Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).

Southern California is one of the most racially diverse regions in the United States; however, it is clear that racial disparities still exist within botany, our membership, and our leadership. We feel that SCB has a responsibility to ensure that the study of plants and efforts to promote their conservation are accessible and inclusive to all who want to participate. The SCB Board is committed to facilitate the inclusion of the BIPOC community into the study and conservation of California’s flora. While this will be an ongoing effort, SCB has initiated the following actions.

  • Create a Diversity Committee to develop and implement concrete actions and initiatives to support a diverse botanical community.
  • Identify existing gaps in inclusivity and increase representation in our membership and Board of Directors.
  • Ensure diverse voices are represented as speakers and leaders in our symposia, publications, workshops, and field trips.
  • Increase accessibility and participation at SCB sponsored events and grants and to promote outreach to diverse communities
